The Laurelli family's legacy in Fornelli is a complex one, marked by both privilege and sacrifice. In 1832, the Carmignano family entrusted them with the stewardship of the fiefdom, and the Laurelli dynasty undertook the restoration of the Baronial Palace. However, their tenure wasn't without its challenges, as they faced difficulties gaining widespread popularity among the townspeople.

Shifting Tides and Ultimate Sacrifice

Fast forward to a pivotal moment in history: October 4th, 1943. Following an assault on a local resident by German troops stationed nearby, the situation in Fornelli escalated dramatically. The 26th Panzer Division, enforcing the brutal "scorched earth" policy, rounded up innocent civilians and condemned them to execution by hanging.

A Moment of Bravery in the Face of Tyranny

In this dire hour, Podestà Giuseppe Laurelli stepped forward with extraordinary courage. He selflessly offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the lives of four townspeople. This act of heroism, though ultimately costing him his own life, demonstrably saved the lives of those four individuals. Laurelli's sacrifice, along with the five others who were hanged, stands as a powerful testament to the burgeoning Italian resistance against Nazi-Fascist forces.
